About the United Church of Christ

Central has been a member of the United Church of Christ (UCC) since this group’s formation in 1957. The year 2007 celebrates the UCC’s 50th anniversary. Since its inception, the United Church of Christ has made five commitments that guide our ministry:

  • To be a united and a uniting church. From the very beginning, the UCC has preached a message of unity among all Christians and throughout the world.

- To be a multiracial and multicultural church, promoting unity and equality throughout all races and cultures, while continuing to honor our diversity.
- To be a church accessible to all—regardless of physical or mental disability and recognizing that all differently-abled persons are valuable members of God’s church.
- To be an open and affirming church. The Open and Affirming movement began as an affirmation of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons but has been expanded to include all persons regardless of language, gender, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, economic or marital status, or faith background.
- To be a peace and justice church—to seek solidarity with victims of war, violence and injustice, understanding that it is necessary to work for both peace and justice, in order to achieve either. For more information about UCC, visit www.ucc.org.
