Adult Education

Study groups afford opportunities to explore our biblical heritage while developing stronger ties with one another:

Bible/Religious Studies
This group meets Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM in the Parlor, led by a pastor or a lay member depending upon the topic selected. Topics are determined by the group and may include scripture and biblical issues, contemporary theological movements, church history, and book reviews. This past year the group had in-depth discussion of each Sunday’s scripture readings.

Personal Study Groups
These are occasional study activities organized around particular and often timely interests of church members.

Theological Reading Group
This group is organized to explore, study, and discuss diverse theological ideas by using books selected by the group members. Books studied this past year included No Future Without Forgiveness by Desmond Tutu, and The Reformation for Armchair Theologians by Glen Sunshine. The group meets quarterly in members’ homes. The next selection is to be announced.

Exploring Contemporary Values Forums
From time to time, issues of some magnitude arise that are of interest or concern to many within the congregation. These issues are addressed through presentation, discussion, brainstorming, or other modes as deemed appropriate, sponsored by the Mission Board, and are often open to the public. Presentations in 2006-2007 included: (1) Immigration’s effect on our low income and African-American communities; (2) Women’s health issues—Ovarian cancer and heart health; and (3) AIDS in Africa.
